| To get started with SLT Broadband… |
| 01 | You need to use either an ADSL modem or an ADSL router to connect your PC to the Internet through SLT Broadband. | 02 | SLT does not provide a router or a modem with the connection. But several compatible models are available at SLT Teleshops for your convenience. | 03 | You can also use an ADSL modem or router purchased from a third party, as long as it is compatible with the one or more of the following standards: | | ◦ | ADSL (ITU G.992.1 G.dmt) | ◦ | ADSL2 (ITU G.992.3/4) | ◦ | ADSL2+ (ITU G.992.5) | | | | 04 | You also need a Splitter (which is usually included with the modem/router) for uninterrupted, simultaneous access to both SLT Broadband and voice services. | 05 | You may also need to purchase one or more Micro-filters if you are using parallel lines, fax terminals etc. on the same SLT line as your SLT Broadband connection. | |
| |
| To choose between a Modem and a Router… |
| 01 | With an ADSL modem you can connect a single PC through the USB port and you must install a driver in your PC to use the modem. | | ◦ | You have to dial out to access the service each time, similar to a Dial-up Internet connection. | ◦ | However, ADSL Modems are usually cheaper than ADSL Routers, are powered through the USB connector and are easier to install and troubleshoot. | | | | 02 | With an ADSL router you get a choice of between single port routers and 4-port routers. | | ◦ | Multi-port ADSL routers can itself connect several PCs, and even a single port router can be extended to several PCs through an Ethernet switch. | ◦ | ADSL routers require configurations in both the Router and the PC and require separate power, but there is no need of installing any driver. | | | | 03 | ADSL modems are preferable if you are using a single PC and do not need to be always online. | 04 | ADSL routers may suit you best if either you need to connect several PCs or you need to stay always online. | 06 | You can also create your own Wi-Fi network by connecting a compatible Wi-Fi access point to the Ethernet interface of an ADSL router, or by using a Wireless ADSL router which has in-built Wi-Fi capabilities. | |

| |
| What should I do if I cannot browse the Internet through My SLT Broadband Connection? |
| 01 | You should call 1243 or (011) 244 1123 and get assistance from our helpdesk so that we can record your incident and provide you assistance in solving it. | 02 | However, before you call our helpdesk, please go through the following steps so we can easily identify your issue and provide you better support. | | | 03 | Step 1: Check Browser Settings | | ◦ | If a page does not load try refreshing the browser using the refresh or reload button. If it does not work clear the cache of the browser In Microsoft Internet Explorer go to Tools ► Internet Options►General | ◦ | Try to access some other web page. If it is possible, there may be some issue with the server you were trying to access. | ◦ | Check whether the browser is on ‘work offline’ mode. (In Internet Explorer check whether File ► Work Offline is ticked and remove the tick) | ◦ | Check whether the browser settings are correct. (In Internet Explorer go to Tools ► Internet Options ► Connections) | | | | 04 | Step 2: Check PC Settings | | ◦ | Check whether there is an active connection to the internet through following the steps below. | ◦ | Check whether the Internet indicator is up on your ADSL router, or if you can get connected through your ADSL modem. If not proceed to step 3. | ◦ | In Windows OS open a Command prompt and type ipconfig /all and enter to check whether you have got an IP address. | ◦ | In Linux open a Console and type ifconfig and enter to check whether you have got an IP address. | ◦ | Check whether your PC can recognize web site names (DNS is active) by typing nslookup www.slt.lk. If you get a reply then the DNS is also active. | ◦ | If an IP address is obtained, check whether the internet connection is working by typing ping www.yahoo.com on the command prompt. If you get a reply then the PC can access the internet and the issue is with your browser settings. | ◦ | If you get any issues with either IP addresses or DNS, please check steps 3 & 4 and please call 1243 or (011) 244 1123 and register a fault. | | | | 05 | Step 3: Check Physical Connectivity | | ◦ | If you are using an externally powered modem/router, check whether the power indicator of the router/modem is on. | | If it is not on, check whether the power adapter is properly connected from your router to the power outlet (make sure that the power outlet is also powered). | | If all connections are correct but still the router is not powered on the fault may be with the power adapter. | | | ◦ | If the power indicator is on, check whether the ADSL indicator of the modem/router is steady. | | If it is blinking or off and all the connections are correct, there is some issue with your line or your splitter. | | | ◦ | Connect the main line directly to router/modem without the splitter and check whether the ADSL indicator becomes steady. | | If so, the issue is with the splitter and you have to replace it. If not, the issue is with your line. | | | ◦ | Check whether the telephone service is working. | | If telephone service is working perfectly and the ADSL is not working you should call 1243 or (011) 244 1123 and log a complaint. | | If the telephone service is also not working call 1241 from any phone and register a complaint to restore your telephone service first. | | | | 06 | Step 4: Check ADSL Modem/Router Settings | | ◦ | To test whether there is any issue with your router, switch off the router for one or two minutes and power it on and check again. | | If the ADSL indicator lights steadily and the Internet indicator lights you should be able to browse without any problems. | | | ◦ | If the Internet indicator is not up in an ADSL router or if you don’t get connected when you dial out from an ADSL modem there may be an issue with the configurations of your modem/router. | | Check the settings with the manufacturer’s manual and the table given in ‘Setting up your SLT Broadband connection’. | | If you need assistance for checking your settings call 1243 or (011) 244 1123. | | | ◦ | If all the configurations are correct but the Internet indicator is not up in a router, you get an error 691 or error 718 when you dial in a modem, there may be an issue with authentication. | | Check your entered username and password and try again. | | If the problem persists after several re-tries call 1243 or (011) 244 1123 and register a fault. | | | | | | 07 | Note: Checking Download Speed | | ◦ | If you experience a noticeable decrease in browsing speed, go to a local site (e.g. www.sltnet.lk) and download a file. | ◦ | If you achieve an average download speed of around 50 kB/s for Home / Entrée packages, around 100 kB/s for Xcite packages, around 200 kB/s for Office packages and 400 kB/s for Xcel packages your connection is working perfectly and the slowness may be due to international congestion. | | | | |
